App Permissions: Read the Fine Print!
In the rapidly evolving world of mobile applications, numerous businesses utilize ingenious tactics to tap into your personal information. But worry not, tech aficionados! We’ve compiled crucial insights to assist you in safeguarding your essential data. A fundamental first step is to be selective about the permissions you grant to the apps you decide to download.
Think about it: why would a basic alarm clock app need access to your camera or your contacts? What could possibly justify a flashlight app’s request for your exact location? By carefully evaluating the permissions you approve, you can effectively shield your personal data from unwanted intrusion.
Dive into the vast array of free applications available on both Android and iOS platforms, all while making sure your information stays secure and well-protected.

The newly announced Xiaomi 17 Pro phones have rear screens that can be used for gaming.
The company offers a case that includes gaming controls for use with the rear screen.
However, an official video clip suggests that this might be a frustrating experience with some games.
Xiaomi has just launched the Xiaomi 17 series, and the two Pro phones are both equipped with rear displays. These screens are used much like cover screens on Flip foldables, but the company has also revealed another use for them.
Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?
Xiaomi confirmed during its launch event that you can effectively turn the Xiaomi 17 Pro phones into a Game Boy of sorts via an optional case. The case connects to the phones via Bluetooth and uses their rear screens.
This case, which costs 299 yuan (~$42), features four face buttons, a circular D-pad, and what appears to be select and start buttons. Xiaomi also posted a video, seen below, that gives users an idea of what to expect.
This seems like a neat idea in theory, as you could play some retro games just fine with these limited controls. But I do imagine that some SNES and Game Boy Advance games might be an issue owing to the apparent lack of shoulder keys.
An even bigger issue seen in the video clip is that the rear cameras obscure some of the gameplay. However, Xiaomi’s images also suggest that you can play games in a smaller window to address this issue. But that leaves you with a truly tiny display, and I can’t imagine many people will enjoy this compromise. For what it’s worth, the Xiaomi 17 Pro has a 2.66-inch rear panel, while the Pro Max has a 2.86-inch secondary screen.
Nevertheless, these rear screens can also be used in other ways. This includes showing general notifications, various watch faces, transit and flight updates, delivery and e-hailing notifications, camera/selfie previews, sticky note functionality, and music playback.
The Xiaomi 17 Pro phones are now available in China, starting at 4,999 yuan (~$701). There’s no word on global availability, so you might have to import the phone and case if you fancy playing games and running emulators on a tiny rear screen.

AYANEO held a surprise sharing session to demonstrate compatibility on the Pocket AIR Mini.
The company showcased a range of GameCube, PS2, and Saturn games running at full speed.
The Pocket AIR Mini will be available mid-October, starting at $70.
AYANEO’s first true budget handheld, the Pocket AIR Mini, is mostly noteworthy because of its $70 starting price, but today the company gave gamers a whole new reason to get excited. Not only will it be cheap, it will play games that many devices in its price range couldn’t even dream of running.
In a surprise sharing session today, the company showcased game compatibility with demanding systems like the GameCube, PS2, and SEGA Saturn. These systems are generally considered beyond the reach of sub-$100 Android gaming handhelds, and some devices in the $150-$200 range struggle to run them at full speed.
Final Fantasy X, God of War II, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Dead Space, and more are listed as playable.
Considering the Pocket AIR Mini packs a modest MediaTek G90T and 2/3GB of RAM, conventional wisdom would say that the console would top off around PSX and N64, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. AYANEO showed a host of games running live on stream, but here are the slides listing games the Pocket AIR Mini can run. Some of the text is in Chinese, but you can infer the game by looking at the image.
Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?
Importantly, the images above also detail which games are playable on the cheaper 2GB version, which is the vast majority of the list. It includes PS2 games like God of War II, Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy X, and Kingdom Hearts II. On the GameCube side, it lists Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Twilight Princess.
The Pocket AIR Mini runs Android 11, but it looks like it will have great compatibility with Android games, too. Dead Cells, Terraria, Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Balatro, Dead Space, and others are included in the list of playable games. At one point in the stream, AYANEO also showcased Genshin Impact running at 60fps, although it isn’t included on the slide.
While on paper this shows impressive performance for an entry-level handheld, there may be dips in performance or crashes during particularly demanding sections of certain games. It’s unlikely that the handheld will support the full catalog of PS2 or GameCube games, but stay tuned to Android Authority for hands-on testing in the coming weeks.
The AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini will be available starting in mid-October, and you can subscribe now to get a free screen protector with your order.

On September 16, the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog will get a little bit bigger as eight new games come to the subscription service.
PS Plus Extra lets subscribers access a large library of contemporary PS4 and PS5 games, while PS Plus Premium adds classic PS1 and PS2 games, as well as PlayStation VR2 titles, on top of that.
In September, one new PS2 game is coming to the PS Plus Premium, while a mix of PS4 and PS5 games is coming to Extra.
The most notable game of the month is Persona 5 Tactica, the strategy game spin-off of Atlus’ beloved RPG Persona 5.
Although it’s not the most exciting month for PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra additions, I still want to help you decide what to play.
As such, I’m ranking all eight titles added to the game catalog this month so you can more easily decide which ones to try out first.

Green Hell
Available on PS4 and PS5
You’ve probably played a game like Green Hell before, as it’s a tough survival game where you gather resources, build, farm, and fight.
What makes it unique is that it’s set in the Amazon Jungle, meaning that it features a lot of plants and wildlife that you don’t normally see in survival games.
If you’re very much into survival games, then you’ll probably have a good time with Green Hell.
Still, I think there are much better games in the genre already available as part of the PS Plus Extra catalog, like Conan Exiles.
As such, don’t feel like you need to go out of your way to try Green Hell out if its setting doesn’t interest you.

Fate/Samurai Remnant
Available on PS4 and PS5
Fate/Samurai Remnant is a fairly niche game. It’s part of a wider series of Japanese video games, the most famous of which is the mobile game Fate/Grand Order.
This specific game is an open-world action game from Omega Force, the same studio behind Dynasty Warriors.
If you’re unfamiliar with Fate as a franchise and aren’t willing to immerse yourself in its universe and lore, then this game might not have much staying power for you.
Those who do stick around find a pretty enjoyable action game, though.

Conscript
Available on PS4 and PS5
If you’re a fan of horror games with retro aesthetics, Conscript should be on your radar.
It’s a horror game set during World War I that follows a French soldier as he navigates the dark and grisly trenches of the war in search of his brother.
Not nearly enough games take advantage of World War I as a setting, so I like that this game does so while leaning into the more horrific parts of that war.
While it is outclassed by another retro-inspired horror game added to the catalog this month, Conscript also finds clever ways to pay tribute to the look and resource management mechanics of many classic horror games.
It’s the first game added to PS Plus this month that I can confidently recommend, as long as you’re a fan of horror.

The Invincible
Available on PS5
The Invincible is a rare example of a novel being directly adapted into a video game.
In this case, it takes a 1964 sci-fi story of the same name and transforms it into a first-person adventure game.
That transition works surprisingly well as it allows the game to really immerse players in the world of Regis III, which is inhabited by more mechanical lifeforms than expected.
It has eleven different endings, too, giving it a replay value that’s not very common in this genre of adventure game.
If you enjoy games like Firewatch or enjoy a good sci-fi novel, The Invincible is tailor-made for you.
I’d consider The Invincible the hidden gem of this month’s PlayStation Plus additions, if that makes it even more intriguing to try.

WWE 2K25
Available on PS4 and PS5
WWE 2K25 needs little introduction, as it’s simply the latest entry in 2K’s long-running wrestling game series.
You can pick your favorite wrestler and play as them in a variety of modes and matches that are not bound by real-world limitations.
For the most part, WWE 2K is a very iterative sequel, refining the gameplay of the wrestling games that came before it.
Its big new feature is a mode called The Island, where players can explore the titular location with a custom wrestler and slowly work to improve their character’s abilities.
You probably already know whether WWE 2K25 appeals to you, but this is also a good choice if you’re looking for something fun to play with your friends within the PS Plus Premium and Extra game catalog.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Available on PS4 and PS5
I highly recommend that PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers play through the whole Legacy of Kain series.
This Gothic action game series about vampires was highly influential in the evolution of narrative in video games, and many of its games still hold up today.
While this series was stuck on older consoles for a long time, that’s no longer the case.
Now, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Blood Omen 2, and Legacy of Kain Defiance are all part of PS Plus, while a remastered collection of the Soul Reaver games is also available for PS4 and PS5.
Although committing to play through this whole franchise is a big commitment, you will have a good time if you take advantage of the fact that many of its games are on PS Plus and play the series through.

Crow Country
Available on PS4 and PS5
While Conscript is a neat retro-inspired horror game, Crow Country is even better. That’s because the game fully embraces its PS1 inspirations to create a new horror game that feels pulled straight out of the 1990s.
For a game that doesn’t look that modern, Crow Country is a surprisingly atmospheric and spooky experience.
It features the resource management and puzzle-solving gameplay elements of Silent Hill and Resident Evil.
Meanwhile, its camera perspective and pre-rendered-looking backgrounds are more similar to the look of Final Fantasy VII, albeit with a horror-focused tone.
It’s a treat for fans of retro horror games, and a must-play now that it’s part of this subscription service’s lineup.

Persona 5 Tactica
Available on PS4 and PS5
The undisputed best game added this month is Persona 5 Tactica. Released in 2023, it’s a spin-off of Persona 5 that’s a turn-based strategy game.
As a fan of series like Fire Emblem and XCOM, it’s very novel to see how Atlus approached this genre while maintaining the flashy presentation of the Persona series.
Overall, Persona makes this transition to a new genre surprisingly smoothly.
For fans of strategy games, this game is way more stylish than most other games in the genre that you’d play.
For fans of Persona 5, this game’s brand-new story and reinterpretations of that game’s UI and Persona gameplay elements will be novel to see.
If you play only one new PS Plus game this month, make it Persona 5 Tactica.

Persona
A weak month for PS Plus Premium and Extra
Source: Sony Interactive Entertainment
While games like Persona 5 Tactica and Crow Country are great, this is one of the weakest batches of new PS Plus Premium and Extra games in several months.
It lacks a true heavy-hitter like Cyberpunk 2077 or one of 2025’s best games, like Sword of the Sea. This month’s games definitely appeal to very specific niches, like retro horror fans.
It speaks to the diversity of unique games that release on PS4 and PS5 every year, but don’t feel surprised if there isn’t a game in this month’s lineup that intrigues you as much as something like Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered would.
GameSir’s GameHub app has gained full Steam support, including cloud saves and other ecosystem features.
The update is also fully optimized for Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Early users are also reporting notable performance gains.
GameSir is rolling out version 5.0 of its GameHub app, with full Steam support, including cloud saves and online play. That means you can now play your Steam games on your Android devices and keep the progress synced across devices, including your Steam Deck.
The update is also fully optimized for Hollow Knight: Silksong, and GameSir has also upgraded the controller experience. The new build brings immersive vibration, adaptive trigger feedback, and instant hot-swaps. A new native rendering mode also promises more stable frame rates, lower latency, and generally smoother performance.
Early users are already testing GameHub 5.0, and the feedback is mixed. Some players say Steam cloud saves are syncing fine, while others have hit snags when moving between devices like a Steam Deck. One workaround is switching the Steam client out of “lightweight” mode, which seems to fix the issue.
Beyond saves, users are reporting that the update also integrates Steam’s ecosystem features. One user confirmed that achievements and the playtime counter also work with the update.
Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?
Meanwhile, multiple players are reporting performance gains. A user who revisited GTA V said, “Just booted up GTA V again and went from 30fps average to 56-60. What black magic is this?”
All told, GameHub 5.0 looks like a significant update, one that’s already convincing those who have been hesitant to try out the streaming app.

You’ll see matches played everywhere, from sprawling grounds to narrow streets, and sometimes even inside homes. The passion extends beyond the pitch, with fans increasingly turning to cricket video games on their smartphones, which are now more accessible and affordable than ever.
Before mobile gaming took off, titles like Ashes Cricket, Battle for the Ashes, Cricket 96, and Allan Border Cricket / Graham Gooch World Class Cricket were the go-to games, enjoyed mainly on consoles and PCs. They laid the foundation for the cricket gaming culture that continues to thrive on phones today.

Twice every week, we at nextpit bring you a selection of apps for Android and iPhone that are usually paid but are free for a limited time. Add some variety to your phone’s app selection with these discounts on games and applications, but don’t waste time!
This list differs from our “Top 5 Apps of the Week” selection, where we provide in-depth reviews and analyses. Here, we simply picked these apps because they are currently available at no charge! Our tip: If you are interested in an app, install it – even if you don’t need it straight away. This will mark it as “purchased” and add it to your app library. You can then remove the app directly from your phone and reinstall it for free whenever you need it.

App Permissions: Read the Fine Print!
In the fast-paced realm of mobile apps, many businesses employ clever strategies to access your personal data. But don’t fret, tech enthusiasts! We’ve gathered essential tips to help you protect your valuable information. A vital first step is to be discerning about the permissions you allow for the apps you choose to install.
Consider this: why would a simple alarm clock app require access to your camera or contacts? What justification could a flashlight app have for needing your precise location? By scrutinizing the permissions you grant, you can effectively guard your personal information against unauthorized access.
Explore the extensive selection of free applications available on both Android and iOS platforms, all while ensuring that your data remains safe and sound.

The rest of the press release simply mentions bonus reward campaigns such as pre-registrations and sweepstakes. Most of the gameplay details have been covered when the major live stream went live last July. To sum it up, this game will play like an RPG but with simple route splits in each stage, automated turn-based battles, and gacha-based character collections.
The press release also confirmed that the previous live stream is still archived and available to view. You can also find it right below.
For the last couple of years, the Epic Games Store has given away free games every week through its PC storefront. With the company having launched its own mobile store, it has also started a second free games program on iOS and Android devices, kicking things off with a curated library of titles and weekly freebies. The app also features mobile versions of Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe.
To access these games you will need to create a free Epic account and install the free Epic Games Store mobile app and log in with your account, but once you do, you can start claiming your free games every Thursday through it. One other thing to note is that Android users can access the app via Android-based emulation devices like Retroid Pocket, as they aren’t limited to just smartphone and tablets.
For now, only iOS users in the European Union can install the app, but the app is available worldwide to Android device users and they have a wider selection of games to choose from in comparison. Like its PC counterpart, you’ll have one week to grab each game that’s offered. Here’s a closer look at what you can grab this week, and what the current mobile games library has to offer. You can also explore what the free PC games are this week on the Epic Games Store.

Bubsy 3D is considered one of the worst games of all time. Now it and other notorious retro platformers in this series are being re-released next month as part of Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection.
Atari and Limited Run Games have revealed the release date for this collection, and it’s only a couple of weeks away. I played the collection at GDC 2025 and can vouch for the fact that it’s a love letter to one of the most infamous video game characters to come out of the golden age of video game platformers in the 1990s.
When will Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection be released?
It’s coming out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch
The latest trailer for Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection confirms that it will launch on September 9. That’s not a date that has any real meaning for the series; it’s just what worked best for the collection.
At this point, Limited Run Games and Atari have spearheaded a lot of retro game re-releases, and Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection follows the format of those closely. It contains almost every game you’d want for the series in question, adds features like rewinding, and contains a library of assets from the original promotion and release of the games in question.
Overall, Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection will contain eight games, although some share a name because the 1990s was an era when different versions of the same game were made for different platforms. Below, you can see the full list of games:

Bubsy 3D for PS1
Of all the games featured, Bubsy 3D is the most derided because it’s considered one of the worst-controlling 3D platformers of all time. It came out after Super Mario 64, but it feels more dated than it in every way, from its polygonal visuals to its clunky tank-like controls. Praise for the game is reserved for April Fool’s Day jokes.
For that reason, Bubsy 3D is the game in the collection that Limited Run Games paid the most attention to. There will be a “Refurbished Edition” of Bubsy 3D available in the collection, which gives the game widescreen support and full analog controls.
On top of that, the library part of this collection is also pretty intensive, as it features the pilot for a Bubsy TV show that never got picked up, officially released Bubsy comics, and interviews with those who worked on the franchise in the 1990s.
This may not be a series that people remember fondly, but it’s at least now being preserved in all its glorious infamy on modern platforms. If you’re looking for a platformer that actually feels good to play, you’re better off trying something like Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound.
