OnePlus 15 sand dune colorway official image

TL;DR

  • The OnePlus 15 has leaked again, despite official teasers for the phone.
  • The leak reveals various RAM and storage configurations for the phone, color options, and its weight.
  • The leak also hints at a large 7,800mAh battery along with 120W fast charging.

Last week, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, its flagship chipset that will power the majority of Android flagships in 2026. That includes the likes of the Galaxy S26 series, the Fold 8, and perhaps even the TriFold. Meanwhile, brands in China have already begun launching devices powered by this chipset, and we’ve already witnessed the Xiaomi 17 series being unveiled. Next in line likely is the OnePlus 15, which is being promoted vehemently ahead of its upcoming launch in China.

Although we expect OnePlus to shower us with details leading up to the launch, prominent leaker Digital Chat Station has revealed some additional information about the OnePlus 15. On a Weibo post, the leaker discussed the various RAM and storage options, color variants, battery capacity, and weight of the phone, among other specifications. According to the leak, the OnePlus 15 is expected to be available in four configurations, featuring variants with 12GB or 16GB RAM, and with storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB.

OnePlus 15 leaked specs

Weibo / Digital Chat Station

Notably, these details are likely specific to China, where the OnePlus 13 also had identical configurations. Meanwhile, the 1TB variant was skipped from the global launch, and this is what we could expect for the OnePlus 15 as well. Additionally, the OnePlus 13 also had a 24GB RAM option only in China, which appears to be missing in the current leak.

OnePlus 15’s massive 7,800mAh battery has also been tipped in the leak — up from the 6,000mAh on the OnePlus 13. Although a significant increase in battery capacity had already been speculated, the exact size was not specified. Considering the leaker’s credibility, we can accept this to be the actual size of the battery. However, we could expect the global variants to ship with a slightly smaller battery.

In addition to the bigger battery, the OnePlus 15 is also getting a slightly higher charging rate — at 120W. Currently, the units sold outside North America support 100W charging, while those in the region are capped at 80W. We might see similar restrictions with this generation, too.

Furthermore, the leaker reiterates previous leaks about the display’s resolution being reduced to 1.5K resolution compared to the OnePlus 13’s QHD+ screen. This screen could be similar to the OnePlus 13R’s, which offers a resolution of 1264 x 2780 pixels. However, at the same time, the refresh rate has been bumped up to 165Hz, which OnePlus has confirmed — and already tested by a reviewer in a OnePlus 15 gaming review. Lastly, the leaker claims the phone’s weight to be 214 grams, which is nearly identical to the OnePlus 13. But given the much larger battery, it is commendable.

While OnePlus has been teasing the phone officially, it has yet to reveal the launch date. However, it may have slyly suggested it to be October 27 in one of its latest teasers. We will update you once OnePlus confirms the dates for the reveal.

It’s not often that we get to talk about TCL, but the company has been blazing its own path for some years now, delivering unique Android products that stand out from the crowd. It’s not doing this by cramming the best hardware you can find on the market into its devices, but is instead offering an experience you can’t anywhere else.

It’s able to offer this by utilizing its own NXTPAPER technology, which delivers vivid colors but also has some of the properties of an ePaper screen. It’s easy on the eyes, responsive, and gives users the best of both worlds. The brand’s latest device, the Tab 8 NXTPAPER 5G, is an Android tablet that can now be purchased from Verizon.

This tablet might replace your e-reader

TAB 8 NXTPAPER 5G on a stand Credit: TCL

The TCL Tab 8 NXTPAPER 5G is a tablet that comes in a size that’s easy to carry, with a compact 8.7-inch NXTPAPER screen, which looks just as good as a traditional screen you’d find on other tablets, but also features the properties of an ePaper screen. TCL describes it as a screen with “nano-etched layers that provide an anti-glare surface.”

To put it simply, you get a matte screen that’s great for all environments and easy on the eyes, but still looks good with full color and responsiveness you’d expect from a device launching in 2025. The tablet also delivers plenty of power thanks to its MediaTek MT8755 chip that’s paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

There’s storage expansion using a microSD card up to 2TB. It has a large 6,000mAh battery which can last all day, along with an 8MP camera on the rear, and a 5MP camera on the front. It runs Android 15, which means you get a revamped OS that’s packed with impressive features. Plus, you get a 5G connection, which can help you stay online anywhere you go.

This tablet can handle pretty much anything you can throw at it, but is made for someone that wants an e-reader with the power of an Android tablet too. Sure, you can get that experience with any Android tablet, but the screen really sets this device apart. It’s something you have to see and feel.

The good news is that this tablet isn’t all that expensive, coming in at just $200 when you sign up for Verizon. Or you can pay just $5.55/month over 36 months if you want to make the purchase easier on your wallet.

A new translation feature is rolling out to WhatsApp on iOS and Android, but the supported languages and features will be different on both platforms.

You can get real-time translation of your WhatsApp messages

Meta announced it’ll “gradually” roll out a new translation feature on WhatsApp for Android and iOS. You’ll be able to translate messages in one-to-one chats, groups, and Channels by long-pressing on them and tapping the “Translate” option. That should allow you to choose what language the message you want translated from or to. The company says that every translation is handled on-device, and WhatsApp cannot see the messages. That means your chats remain encrypted.

It’s not the same for everyone

Android users are getting a better version of the feature, albeit with fewer supported languages. Once they translate a message, they’ll have the option to turn on automatic translation for the entire thread and see translated versions of all future messages.

On the other hand, iPhone users will be able to use the feature in more languages. In total, WhatsApp on iOS will be able to translate messages between the 19 languages supported by Apple’s Translate app. Android users will be able to use translations in six languages:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Hindi
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Arabic

Meta’s new feature comes shortly after Apple launched Live Translation on its own Messages app on iOS 26. The feature works automatically while you type your messages, much like what Meta says Android users will be able to do on WhatsApp.

That’s what AI is all about, right?

I feel like we’re in the middle of an automated translation boom, and I love it. Learning languages can be fun, but it’s difficult, so having reliable translation tools at hand can make life much easier. Considering how many people around the world use WhatsApp, that feature could be even more consequential than the Live Translation on the AirPods Pro 3. I’ll definitely use it way more often.

Android & Chill

Android Central mascot

(Image credit: Future)

One of the web’s longest-running tech columns, Android & Chill is your Saturday discussion of Android, Google, and all things tech.

I think one of the fastest ways to wreck anything good is to randomly add a bunch of AI nonsense to it. Since Google loves to prove me right, I was surprised that it has taken so long for Chrome to get its share. Google just announced what’s coming to Chrome, and I’m even more surprised by how useful some of it actually looks.

Gemini in Chrome is your new browsing assistant, and while that name is unimaginative, it reflects most of what’s coming: simple tools that Google should be able to deliver without much disruption or security/privacy concerns.

What’s coming

The Gemini Era graphic from Google.

For now, Chrome is seeing only a handful of Gemini features baked in. That’s fine since you’re only a bookmark away from most anything Gemini can do; it’s a web browser after all.

The latest version of the Android Gradle Plugin (AGP) introduces an optimized resource-shrinking approach that unifies code optimization and resource shrinking, achieving up to 50% reduction in app size for apps that share significant resources and code across different form factor, says Google.

In the new approach, Android’s long-standing optimizer R8, processes code and resource references at the same time, which makes it possible to identify all resources that are only referenced from unused code, and thus remove them along with the unused code.

This completely eliminates the need for the unconditional keep rules generated by AAPT2 (the resource packaging tool for Android) and provides much more fine-grained and precise information for discarding unused code and resources.

In previous versions, AAPT2 generated unconditional keep rules before R8 optimized the code, often causing them to reference unused code and preventing R8 from removing that code along with its associated resources.

“As mentioned, the new R8 optimization pipeline can achieve over 50% improvements in apps that share significant code and resources across different form factors, while also providing measurable benefits for smaller apps.

With the new optimized behavior, developers now have four distinct approaches to app optimization: no optimization, R8-only, R8 with resource shrinking, and optimized resource shrinking. Each successive step provides additional benefits.

Enabling R8 trims the size of your DEX, while enabling resource shrinking removes unused resources in both the res folder and in the resource table, but does not change the DEX size further, and finally, optimized resource shrinking further reduces the size by removing both resources and DEX code since it can trace references across the DEX and resource boundary

The new resource shrinking pipeline is available as an opt-in in the latest AGP 8.12.0. To enable it, you use the following AGP configuration:

android {
  buildTypes {
    release {
      isMinifyEnabled = true
      isShrinkResources = true
      …
    }
  }
}

The new behavior will be the default in the upcoming AGP 9.

Reducing an app’s size has several benefits, including faster download, quicker installation, and lower memory consumption. It also improves startup time, enhances rendering speed, and reduces ANRs (Application Not Responding behavior usually occurring when an app’s UI thread is blocked for too long).

Google has released Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2, the latest update for the Android Quarterly Platform Release that will be known as the December Pixel Feature Drop. If you’re subscribed to the Android 16 QPR Beta Program, you should be able to install the latest release by going to Settings > System > Software updates > System update. The update also comes with the September 5, 2025 Android security update.
The devices that support the new Beta update include Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel  9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, 9a, 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and Pixel Tablet.

This is the biggest change arriving with the Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 update

Perhaps the biggest change with the update is the addition of the Themed icon shapes. Go to Settings > Wallpaper & style > Icons and you’ll see five different shapes that you can choose from for your app icons. They are:

  • Circle (default)
  • Square
  • Four-sided “cookie”
  • Seven-sided “cookie”
  • Arch

Go to Settings > Display & touch and you’ll see that the page has received its Material 3 Expressive makeover. Additionally, a big change has been made to Health Connect. Previously a data hub that helped health and fitness apps share data with each other, Health Connect now will automatically count your steps using the phone’s sensors.

Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 reaches Platform Stability

Google notes that Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 has reached Platform Stability, which means that app developers can focus on testing their apps and cleaning up their final designs. Developers can prepare for the final release of their apps without worrying about having to deal with any last-minute changes.

The update is build number BP41.250822.010. Google explained in the Release Notes that a new requirement called Android developer verification is designed to link people or organizations with their Android applications. This will make it harder for malicious actors to disseminate malware, financial fraud, impersonation, or other harmful apps by being anonymous.

Starting in September 2026 and in specific regions, Android will require apps to be registered by verified developers to be installed on certified Android devices, with an exception made for installs made through the Android Debug Bridge (ADB).

Android Photo Picker hero image

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Google is rolling out an updated Photo Picker with a much-needed search bar, making it easier to find specific photos and videos to share with apps.
  • The new search functionality works for local media and integrates with Google Photos to search your cloud library and offer suggestions for people or places.
  • The “Albums” tab is also being renamed to “Collections” and now groups folders to better organize your media and separate personal albums from app-generated ones.

Android’s Photo Picker allows you to selectively share photos and videos with an app, rather than granting it access to your entire media gallery. It’s a privacy-preserving tool intended for apps that only have a one-time or infrequent need for your media. While its simple two-tab UI — one for a chronological view of your media and another for your albums — is straightforward, it’s also arguably too simple, lacking many of the convenient features of Android’s older file picker. Fortunately, Google is now rolling out an update to the Photo Picker that introduces some much-needed quality-of-life improvements.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

Late last week, Google began pushing the August 2025 Google Play System Update. While the official changelog was sparse, we’ve observed that the update activates a major new feature in Android’s Photo Picker: a search bar.

Following the update, I and several members of the Android Authority team noticed the new search bar appear at the top of the Photo Picker UI. As you’d expect, it lets you enter keywords to find specific images, GIFs, or videos in your local gallery. If you’ve granted the Photo Picker access to your Google Photos library, its capabilities expand further, showing recommended searches for people and places and pulling in matches from your cloud library.

While a small number of users first spotted the search bar back in July, the feature has now started reaching a much wider audience. Many Pixel users in the Android Beta and Canary programs received it in recent weeks, but the August 2025 Google Play System Update is what’s making the new Photo Picker widely available to all Android users.

Furthermore, the Photo Picker’s Albums tab (now called “Collections”) is also getting a facelift. Instead of displaying every album on your phone in one long list, it now groups local albums into “From this device” and “From your apps.” While there can be some overlap, the goal is to separate your personal folders from those created by applications. This doesn’t fully declutter the tab, as albums like Screenshots, Downloads, and cloud albums remain in the main view, but it’s a solid step toward better organization.

These changes, especially the search bar, are significant enhancements for a tool that struggled with developer adoption before Google mandated its use last year. Hopefully, Google continues to build on this momentum so users and developers won’t feel forced to use an inferior alternative to Android’s old file picker. Fortunately, we know more improvements are already in the pipeline, such as the ability to resize the photo grid, tap-and-drag to select multiple items, and quickly scroll through the gallery.

Qualcomm Inc. announced its latest flagship chipset, ‘Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’, which is expected to power the latest Android smartphones, according to a blog post by the company on Sunday.

The chipset is to be unveiled at the Snapdragon Summit on Sept. 23-25. Following the Snapdragon Elite chipset, this upcoming model instead names itself after the Elite’s predecessors, the Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3, while also incorporating the ‘Elite’ name. The Verge reported that this is likely because the firm wanted to remind consumers that it was building upon the architecture of its predecessors and also avoiding the number ‘4’ which is considered unlucky in Chinese culture.

The company said that the ‘Elite’ brandname is reserved for the most “industry-leading product” which “push boundaries in capability, experience and innovation”.

It’s not just a name. It’s a promise, the blog post said.

Google Pixel 9a vs iPhone 16e rear hero

Ryan Haines / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Google has dropped a new “Best Phones Forever” ad a day after the iPhone 17 launch.
  • The spot shows a Pixel boasting Gemini’s AI video generation capabilities and mocking the iPhone’s lack of an equivalent feature.
  • The ad isn’t Google’s strongest burn yet, but it’s a playful reminder of Pixel’s AI edge over Apple’s flagships.

Apple just unveiled the iPhone 17 series, and Google is wasting no time pouncing on it. The company has released a new “Best Phones Forever” ad in an attempt to burn Apple. In this ongoing series, a smug Pixel banters with a clueless iPhone, only to show off a feature the iPhone still doesn’t have. However, this new ad, titled “Generation Gap,” doesn’t quite land with the same bite as Google’s previous entries.

The ad shows an iPhone trying to teach chickens how to sing, only to be schooled by the Pixel, which reveals it created that and another video of turtles working in an office with Gemini. This is followed by a reminder that the Pro Pixel 10 models come with a year of Google AI Pro free, something Apple can’t match because, well, Siri is nowhere close to Gemini.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

That said, it’s certainly not Google’s sharpest jab yet. With the iPhone 17 series finally catching up on long-missing features Android has had for ages, the company could have swung harder. It could have at least shown an iPhone 17 in the ad instead of the older model.

All said, it’s still a lighthearted poke that doubles up as a flex for Pixel’s AI perks — worth a quick watch, if only for the singing chickens and turtles running a “shell company.”
